On January 13, 1900, Benton Revelle lead a revolt among some prisoners at the old jail across the street from the Court House. During the escape he fatally shot Sheriff Herman Barnickol. The Sheriff returned fire, fatally wounding Revelle. The Sheriff died from his wounds on January 27, 1900. There are several lessons we can learn about jail security and officer safety. This is a very long story..... and I've condensed it quite a bit.
